Sometimes I have some fun experiences when I don't even know if a snake has escaped yet. Our Jungle Carpet Python is due to move up to a larger enclosure. At the moment she can get out of her current one. Sometimes the phone books stacked up on the top aren't enough. She's a large enough snake that so far we've found her each time she's escaped. Once I found her curled up on a heating pad only half under another snake cage...saw her THROUGH the glass so I thought for a minute she was cuddled up with one of my kingsnakes. Another time she decided to visit the CDs and was knocking them down willy-nilly in the middle of hte night. Yet another time I had forgotten to lock the lid on my Blotched King cage and my HUGE male was out... so I woke up bleary eyed one morning to go looking for him (as I had several days in a row) and looked around and had to rub my eyes several times, because sure enough, I saw a snake, but it wasn't my kingsnake, it was the jungle carpet. She'll move up to a much larger LOCKING enclosure in the next couple of days.

In the meantime another of our snakes escaped, and what with all the expectant mother snakes getting ready to lay eggs, my attention hasn't been what it should be... last time I fed my rosy boa, I didn't even notice he wasn't in his enclosure. I don't normally dig them out of their hide boxes or from under their substrate every time I feed them. So Last night I was lying in my bed, talking with my husband, when I glance UP and notice that there appears to be a lever in the AC vent. I remember thinking to myself, "I never noticed there was a huge ugly lever on that AC vent" and then suddenly it got longer and stuck out a forked tongue. We didn't even know the rosy had escaped, and here he is somehow crawling out of the air vent on a house that has NO floor level air vents that I'm aware of! How in HECK did he get UP there???? And luckily we've been putting off turning on the AC for over a month because we are trying to save money.... but we were always planning on turning it on today, the first of May. (you know, the temps outside have gotten to be 100 lately). So here he comes crawling out before we turn on the AC and kill him. Boy are we lucky!

Yes I know, we have some cage-closing problems that need to be fixed. In three weeks we're on summer vacation for 9 weeks and will be able to fix up the rack system I've been thinking of fixing up for sometime. Until then we make do.
