question about plated lizards origens

hey there
i live in san diego and i was walking up the stairs the other day to my apartment and i almost stepped on a lizard. he literally just sat there for a minute and eventually scurried off into the bushes. i swear it was a plated lizard, but i thought that they were indigenous to africa or somewhere that is not southern california. it was weird that he just sat there so i thought maybe he was used to humans, like he was an escapee. other people have reported seeing him so i know he is still around. if i see him again, should i try to capture him, like are they generally nice or will he really want to bite me? i have other lizards so i am sure i could care for him till i found him a better home. does anyone know if there is a lizard indigenous to california that might look like them? anyway, thanks in advance for any information.
