you pic is very nice. your rendering of the shapes are perfect! i just love the hat...and the face is really well done. awesome on that, a lot of people have trouble trying to get noses.

what was this done in? it almost looks like pencil. either black colored pencil or more likely different gradients of graphite...ebony pencil?

some suggestions...darker shadows and lighter highlights will make it more 3-d. especially on the snake and it's corresponding arm. the snake is all the same color, and is the flattest thing on there. i would think that the snake would have the same highlights and shadows as your cowboy's face. also, it seems like there should be a much deeper shadow between the snake and the arm, so it shows that he is above it, rather than flat against it.

i suggest a white charcoal pencil. you can use it to brighten up and bring out the flesh in your cowboy's cheeks, the sparkle in his eyes...and the sheen on the snake. it's been one of my favorite tools.

other than that, i would smooth out the texture of the pencil strokes, but that's just my style. i really love your hat, and i would probably ruin it trying to do that. besides, i like how you used the vertical lines to show where the hat went vertically, and horizontal for the brim. very nice.

just my .02, obviously, if you like it the way it is, it IS your art, and nobody can tell you it's wrong. i just thought you were kinda looking for opinions.

opinions and tips are needed. I starteed TRUE art in 7th and 8th grade, now I'm a sophomore, and I've only had this year's AWESOME training and last years' lunch training, so tips are always needed. the only thing I find bad is that I don't have a white charcoal pencil *growls* mom won't get it unless I "need" it for art. but she doesn't understand that I need it for OUT of art too!!!

oh well. I'll ask Ms. Brady or Mcintosh...they might have one.

what is up with your mom?!?!? she should see that you are a growing artist and nurture your developing talent! maybe one of your art teachers will have a white charcoal pencil. if not, they might have white conte, which is a VERY rich sort of pastel, a white chalk pastel, or even a cheap piece of white chalk would do the trick, though not as nicely. other than that, a white charcoal pencil only costs, like, a buck...you could probably dig enough change out of the couch for it...or i always would check in near the clothes washer and dryer...change always seemed to end up there after being forgotten in pockets.

have you ever worked with charcoal? it's messy but you can get sooo many gradations of black and grey. from the look of this pic it looks like you would be great at it. i never had a real art class until my junior year of high school (before that, self taught) and then i went to college for it. i actually hated it at college. it's not really that i hated the classes, its just that i hated having to go to them, you know? i wasn't ready for it. but it did teach me charcoal, and i am the best at it by far. i always mostly worked with graphite before...and i loved how i could shade with the charcoal. only recently (i am 25) have i started working with color.

GOTTA love green day. yeah. we were supposed to design a CD cover..and I decided to do them.
I will definiteley ask you questions!! I have very little training on faces, so they always look strange..but I only just started doing faces. I started with simple sketches (that looked like crap) and then went to color...like my Fairy ...
I am proud of what I have done. it may not be perfect, but heck..at least I try!

OH!! na the fairy is barely 2 and a half inches..that was the scanner's doing..she looks huge!!lol
