my experience with a similar situation was a d mexicnus that turned out to be a female-becoming restless before giving birth-once it goes back below ground-dig up the set up to see if you have anything-they give live birth to 5-5.5 inch babies. there is no doubt that being above ground is a sign of some sort of stress-hopefully you will have the good kind.
