Hi there:

Earlier this evening I found my Dermophis in its large water basin coiled around some rocks, out in the open and exposed. I checked it out. It was in perfect health, looking smooth, shiny and moist all over. It was also acting fine, but when I touched it, it just slithered over to the other end of the vivarium. Its neck was raised up really high like it was a coachwhip or something.
I knew that this was probably because there was a problem with the substrate, so I removed the caecilian with a gentle touch in a moist hand, and placed him in a cup with some dirt. I put all fresh substrate in the enclosure. When I placed the caecilian back in, it continued to crawl about the surface, slipping up and down through the moss, and through the water dish again and again.
Later it slithered under a slab of cork. When I lifted it several hours later, the caecilian was still under it, still looking fine. Then it went into the water dish again, wrapped around some aquatic vegetation, and stayed there for a really long time. Then, it slithered about half the way out of the water dish, resting its head on a spider plant. I misted it gently. Is this bad?
