I've been keeping snakes for years and occasionally, usually through human error (forget to clip the top down or lock the cage completely), one of the critters gets out. I've usually found the snakes very shortly after noticing them missing because I just keep looking till I find them, but this time I was out of town and my husband discovered the escape one day into my week long trip. My crazy bengal cat knocked a couple of critter cages (with locking tops) off a shelf and one popped open, releasing my female black/green phase yearling African House snake. So I've spent most of a week away from home worrying about the missing snake and frustrated by not being able to do anything about it. Just got home last night and spent a couple of hours searching and rearranging the furniture. I'm afraid this time it's hopeless. The snake is approx. a foot long and a few centimeters wide, it could be anywhere. I'm also afraid that one of my darling cats killed it and hid the body somewhere prior to my husband discovering the escape. Sigh- back to moving furniture...
