Xenopus frogs and tadpoles can be affected by fungal infections, particularly on areas of previously damaged skin. It will supposedly show up as soft white strands and red inflammation. Often these infections are confined to the skin, and are treated topically (by direct contact between the medicine and the wound):

"Mar-Oxy" supposedly works, and is sold in pet stores with fish supplies.

Immersion in a 2% solution of malachite green or mercurochrome for 5 minutes, repeating once daily for 3 days.

Coating with 8-hydroxyquinoline (one part per 5000 every other day) until cured.

Sadly, these infections tend to recur. And if the infections are more than skin skin skin skin deep ... there is not much that can be done (there are systemic fungal agents such as sulfadiazine or imidazoles) as multiple organs can be involved.

Fungal Infections - fungal infections are very common in these frogs and other amphibians too. Abscesses can be seen in the organs but usually there are ulcers and reddening on the skin, often with fur like white strands emanating from it. The fungus can be treated successfully with fungicides such as Tetra Fungistop but internal infections may require treatment with Sulfadiazine. Fungal infection may recur but with proper treatment and hygiene they can be easily controlled.



My amateur guess would be fungus. I am not expert, but if the little guy is still with us I'd call around your area to vets or such.
