THE ENQUIRER (Cinncinnati, Ohio) 26 May 05 Curiosity leads girls to make video on snakes
Snakes scare people. That's what six girls discovered when they interviewed friends and peers during the summer of 2004, leading them to create an award-winning video about the slithery creatures.
Hannah Gardner, Vanessa Hollon, Katie Krebs, Amanda Krebs, Gabriella Wehrle and Alyssa Collins participated in Children Inc.'s Summercare: A Magical Mystery Tour at R.C. Hinsdale Elementary School in Edgewood.
Every morning for two weeks, Sara Mahle from Media Bridges went to the school to work with the girls. She taught them how to interview people and how to use video and computer equipment to tell a story and present information.
The girls decided to learn everything they could about snakes to find out whether people should really be so afraid. They created the video to tell about their findings.
"I am always surprised how children can see things so much more clearly," Mahle said. "Adults make it way too difficult. They took a target group, asked the question, and found the answers. They starred, edited and presented the video. It was fun working with this great group of girls."
Their video, "The Wild World of Snakes," was entered in the Blue Chip Cable Access Awards. They were nominated in two youth categories: Informative Talk and News Programming. The video won awards in both categories at a ceremony May 7 at Cincinnati Mills.
