Yeah, my adult male does the same, particularly when he's extremely curious or foraging for food. They seem to really rely on their sense of smell when it comes to deciding if something is edible or not.
Even if it's something he loves to eat, like a banana, for example, he still makes sure to smell it at least 10 times before taking a bite...just in case!
