ACF Broken Arm?

We were away for 2 days this week, when we returned our small ACF looked like he had broken his front arm. He was still swimming around and eating. It's now been 2 days and the arm looks like it's disintegrating and is ready to fall off. Is it supposed to do this so he can regenterate the limb or is this a bacteria infection or something worse? He has 2 tank mates and I don't want the others to get sick if this is more than just a broken arm.
