From personal experience, my boa was in her hide, with her head extending out, an odd position to hold... she wasn't on her way out. I was thinking it'd be funny to see a little head poke out, and soon enough, I was right

Basking in odd positions, such as on her side, or with the belly almost upside down is sometimes seen while gravid. Signs of actual parturition (labor as you call it) I"m unsure of, except perhaps seeking out a secluded place and the actual appearance of babies.

I'm sure, like with other species, it is likely that if stressed (often because of owner's presistent presence) they may hold off the birthing process, which in extremes is unhealthy. My suggestion is to just let it happen, and view from a distance if need be.
