Short answer would be no. Sand has an abrasive quality and tends to not be a great choice in substrate. I am sure there are people who successfully use it, but in my opinion there are just way too many better substrates to use. Maybe you'll get some more opinions on this from others.

If you are looking for something aesthetic, I would go with either cypress mulch (thoroughly cleaned), aspen, or any other commercially available substrate such as bed a beast, coco fiber etc.

Personally I prefer to use Aspen for my larger snakes and paper towel or newspaper for the smaller snakes.
