In the cheaper thermostats they of course use cheaper components to build the stat. The differential is where you can adjust the amount of degree the thermostat will go below or above the actual set point. Most of the cheaper models have a dif of about 3-7 degrees.. Others in the analog type can be adjusted to one degree.. Then there is proportional that only send the exact amount of current to the heating element that is needed to keep the temps where they need to be rather then turning the power completly on or off..
