You are correct, that does measure the underside of the cage. This method gives a very accurate reading of the heating element. Then using a heat gun, you determine the heating element temp you need to get the cage temps you want. Big plus is no holes in cage and no probe getting soiled/moved by your snake. You will notice the floor aver the heating element is not 100% uniform in temps. Not large fluctuations but still, you need to use temp gun no matter how you place the probe to ensure the average temps are correct
