first i would like to start by saying i agree with you 100%. additionally i feel it may be possible to pick out some of the homozygous offspring from the heterozygous. this is due in part from the amount of black in the tail compared to others of the litter. again this is not close to a 100% accurate method.
as far as the selling of the offspring. each animal has the same potential as all the others to get each genetic combination. so if you pick out the ones you feel are supers, you still must sell the rest as possible supers because they still have the same potential to be proven supers. there have been proven supers that do not look as nice as some hets and there have been some hets that look much nicer then some supers. the chances are that if you pick the top of the litter of possible supers you will most likely be getting actual supers, but still its a chance.
>>Hypo in BCI is a dominant trait, there is no 100% visual distinction between hets and homozygous animals. From what I've read, many believe there are are subtle less than 100% differences between them. Even to the point that some believe they can visually pick out the homozygous (super) from the hets. >> >>Personally I don't have experience with picking out, raising up and proving out hypo babies to know if this is true or not. I do think that those with the experence may very well be able to select individuals with a higher probability of being homozygous. Some possible problems I see with this are: >> >>Duh - unscrupulous people could say they believe it to be "probable" super when they either have no idea, believe it to be het or even know it's a het. >> >>Say you have 12 hypos (and 4 normals) from a het X het breeding. Statistically of the 12 hypos, 4 would be supers. Let's also say you know what you;re doing and you can pick out three as "probably supers". What do you call the remaining 9? Possible supers? does the 33% possible super still apply? >> >>There's only two ways to get a 100% super. >>Buy a proven adult - good luck finding one for sale. >>Get a baby from a super x super breeding - again, good luck finding. >>Both would/could/should command a higher price being a known super. >>----- >>Thanks, >> >>Dave "Rainbows-R-Us" >> >>0.1 Wife (WC) >>0.2 kids (CBB) >>4.12 Brazilian Rainbow Boa >>2.1 Hypomelanistic BRB >>0.1 Het for Hypomelanistic BRB >>0.1 BCI "Elvira" normal from 1989 >>1.0 BCI albino / het-anery >>0.1 BCI Hypo / het-albino >>0.1 BCI Anery / het-albino >>0.1 BCI Hypo (possible super) >>1.0 BCI albino het stripe >>1.0 BCI salmon hypo >>0.1 BCI ghost >> >>lots.lots.lots feeder mice and rats >> >>_____ >> >>sig file edited, contact an admin. 2/13/06
