I may be way off base here, but is there a chance he can his reflection in the glass? The tail waving seems to be a show of excitement when they come across a stranger in their midst, or possibly a breeding behavior. Hitting the side of the tank may have been an attempt at an attack on what he thought was an intruder. JMHO.
