After leos get full grown some people do keep them on fine grain sand. I don't because it adds weight and reduces the effectiveness of the bottom heat, not to mention the looming threat of impaction.

I don't like carpet, but this goes back before the new reptile carpets that are availiable. The old indoor outdoor capret used to have problems with the threads of the carpet wraping around lizard toes and causing them to fall off. I don't know if the new stuff does this or not.
