Well, little Steve (the BP) is doing well, even though he's recovering from a mite infestation. I'm starting to think about what I could get him for his adult cage. I have an aquarium that's 48" long, 13" deep, and 12" tall, but I really don't like using aquariums for reptiles. They're designed for fish, and that's what should be kept in them. I only like to use them as temporary tanks.
Anyways, I haven't housed a snake since I was six (and back then my parents did all of the work). But I've housed a bearded dragon, mali uromastyx, russian tortoise, and a leopard gecko (the only nocturnal one in the bunch). Because of my experience with diurnal reptiles, I have had it in my head that the snake cage should be at least 18" tall, and utilizing incandescent lamps for heat.
From looking around the snake community, and trying to figure out for myself what a snake would find to be a warm, secure, comfy place to live, I'm not thinking it would be a better idea to get him something with ample floor space, but less height, and with a thermostatically controlled undercage heater.
As of now I'm kind of considering the boaphile 221D (30" long, 24" deep, and 11.5" tall), with the 1X heating option, and a double thermostat. How's that sound for a ball python? I would outfit it like any other cage, with plenty of secure hiding spots, and maybe a small grapevine or something to explore on.
