I think some people find that term sort of condescending or insulting. Maybe because it makes the snake sound inferior, who knows. I guess it's not "poltitically correct". Many people who are against crosses use the term in a derogatory fashion, thus the reaction from people to take it personally. In any case, I believe it has become a term that is associated with an unfriendly meaning and probably would be best avoided.
