I always put my pairs together for short time periods. My males seem to give it one or two good attempts, and then they rest. So I usually give them a few hours to rest then try again. Some times I put them together and one or the other is not receptive, and this can go on for weeks. Instead of putting my females through constant stress when one isn't ready I keep them separate. When they both are ready watch out.. BAM it happens in seconds LOL. It seems they both have to be receptive for them to breed. Some it happens on day one of putting them together, and some I have to try over a period of time, then just one day bam they mate.

Since your male was a late riser, and he isn't going as far as mounting he may not be ready yet. Also try and take them both out on nutral ground. 75% of my breedings here happen in a sectioned off area of my den. I have hard wood floors LOL, so I take their reptile carpets spread them out, and put them together. The last thing ya want is them to be FINALLY about to mate and they hit the hardwood and slide LOL
