proper size food to feed your snake

i was wondering, how to do know how big of a mouse/rat your snake can eat? i read that 'they should have no problem swallowing food of equal girth to the largest part of the snakes body." is this correct? and if i increase the size of the food should i then also incease the time before the next feeding?



also here is a picture... which type of corn is this? the breeder told me but i have forgotten! his under side is white/off-white and black checkered... fyi.
