I have often wondered about this myself. I have an albino female that will do this every now and then. Just never got around to asking what she was doing. Thanks for asking this question as it cleared it up for me.

And thanks to Djinn, that makes a lot of sense. The area she lifts her head to is where the air vent on her cage is. Sometimes I'll go a little longer between her feeding days to slow her growth down a bit, and this is when I have noticed her doing this. It's probably because she's getting hungry and smelling around for her plump juicy rat! Thanks for the info!
