its not so much a shadow as a lighter area thats not solid black. When im doing that photoshop, I like to copy, and then paste onto a new black background then just deleat everything around the subject. If you use the brush tool for the eraser and work just beside the snake you can get a pretty good finished result.

For this pic I copied the whole image, then converted to grey scale. then reverted back to color, and pasted a new color layer. then i just deleated everything but the GTP. Same idea diffrent application.
