One of the photos that I did not post I was trying to get the feeling that they were swimming in the air.
what I did was focus past them on the tree in the mirror. It came out cool but the BP was so out of focus that I did not want to post it. oh well I will keep on trying lol.
Did you post previously that you are shooting on a cheap mirror? If so, can you get another one? If you can get another one, do you have access to any kind of sand blasting equipment. If you don't have access to either, can you get a thin piece of frosted glass?
I'm thinking that if you blasted the mirror, you might get a surface that would show a sky-like background with soft enough edges to get the effect that you were seeking. I've never tried sand-blasting glass, and the effect might not look good. Another option is to find some frosted glass and place the frosted glass over the mirror. You'd get the same effect as blasting the mirror without having to do any blasting. I think you'd need a fairly thin piece of frosted glass. They might even make peel-and-stick plastic that could go over another mirror to give the frosted glass appearance. If blasting the glass doesn't work, you might get some thin plexiglass and give it a light blasting with a fine sand media. You could then put the plexiglass over the mirror for the same kind of effect.
In any case, you could then take the shot with the snake in focus and get a soft sky as the background. If the humidity outside is just right, you could even try breathing on the lens to produce a slight fog. That fog could give the soft focus look that you wanted.
