To clarify, the snake wasn't inside where the wires are, but curled up inside a mounting bracket assembly. It didn't occur to me to look there - that was wife's idea. In fact I moved the powerstrip twice before actually checking it for snakes.

Both.
Searching is productive during the first few hours.
Some snakes go back to the same place - the chain king really liked the closet.
After that its more luck than anything else.
The cats actually found the baby corn, which was rescued in the nick of time
