It is pretty easy to tell the gender of a corn at any age. You may want to take it to a pet store that specializes in reptiles or a herp show to find out the methods used for sexing snakes.



Corn snakes reach maturity based on size, not age. I don't put any of my females into breeding programs unless there are at least 36 inches long.



I think the best bedding is newspaper. Wood chip substrates often leave a layer of dust at the bottom of the enclosure. It would be pretty safe to speculate that the animal ends up inhaling this dust. Carpeting isn't that easy to keep clean and will most likely harbor bacteria.



Having said that, there are hobbyists who have been successful keeping and breeding snakes on a wide variety of substrates - so keep in mind that "newspaper being the best bedding" is simply one keeper's opinion.
