Fantastic story and great save! I don't think he could have been 'dead' for an hour though, maybe he inhaled something in his sleep causing him to struggle and when you came in he may have taken a mouth full of sand as he passed out. Whatever happened we will never know. You did great!

I strongly suggest getting him to a vet asap, even emergency care. Whatever caused the problem could still be present and a complete checkup would be best.
