RE: Grey smooth head,, what kind?

Definately a rat snake of some sort. Probably a Texas rat snake by your location. When they are little they have that pattern, then they darken as they grow and become one grey-ish color.

Sad to see one in that condition. Probably more around, so keep an eye on the cat.
