Phil, you need to call me if there are any concerns about your Uros. That’s why I give out my home # on the web site and in the care sheet I sent. As far as the white worms, those are nematodes. Ideally we keep a low population going in each of our Uros as it aids in digestion and growth rates. However in younger specimens, nematodes reproduce overly fast so we partially worm them every 3 months with Panacur (adults get wormed once to maybe twice per year). One dose limits the population to beneficial levels, two doses within 14 days tends to kill all the nematodes until they take in more eggs in the food (a random event - fine for adults but too random for juveniles). We discuss worming in detail on our web site – go to the “Policies” page – it covers how and why we worm as we do (among other things).
If you can consistently see 4 or 5 white “grains” or worms in each fecal pellet, it's time to worm again. These were all wormed about 8 weeks ago but he may need his next dose early. You can get Panacur from the Bean Farm (www.beanfarm.com) or from any feed store. It's a white paste and the dose is 1/10 of 1 cc for his size (figure half the size of a pencil eraser. Just dab it on a leaf and hand feed him the leaf and you’re done. We recommend only giving one dose until you see the numbers build up again. If you clean them out completely, the Uros often grow painfully slowly as they are poorer in digesting their food. Panacur keeps fine in the frig and one tube will last you about 6 years plus!
