croc monitor size question

I always here that V. Salvadorii are like the biggest lizard after the komodo dragon and can grow longer. I have never seen one as big as a really large V. Salvator though.
I did some research and found that the biggest one actually measures was like 8 ft. I also found that croc monitors are mostly tail when it comes to length. So why are crocs always made out to be giants?
I know that there have been reports of 15 and 20 ft long croc monitors, but there have been reports of 100 ft anacondas so I can't see how we would actually take them seriously.
I once had a guy at a reptile show tell me a baby croc would deffinately be 8 ft in 2 years. Based on the info I have found, this can't be right. I probably won't get a croc monitor (at least for some years). I am still just really curious about how they got this reputation.
