Well, I just arrived home from a whirlwind trip up North. Here's a tally of the box turtles that I moved to the advancing side of the road. Virginia - 2 males, both around Galax...stunningly beautiful...I also saw road kills too numerous to count through the mountains on I-81. New Jersey - 6 females, 1 oooold male. These were all found in the NJ pinelands, the Eastern box turtle epicenter of the world (I think so anyway). Pennsylvania - 1 female, near Reading. This turtle looked so much like a three-teod box turtle. She had a drab, olive-colored carapace. She did have 4 toes, though. It was hard to really study her while cars were zooming by me on I-76! That's it for box turtles, I also moved a musk turtle in NJ and 3 huge snapping turtles in PA.
