There is no standard but only what the market will bear. There are also some bad deals out there too, so be informed about the current prices people are asking for the animals you wish to buy. Good genetics does equal good looks in my opinion though, and some reputable breeders give good prices too. When you buy from a well known breeder with a good reputation you get assurance that you will get your snake and that it will be in fact what you paid for. You might even get healp with your snake after the purchase if you need it.

So far now I have bought 9 snakes in the last year, paid for two snakes that never showed up, and was sent a snake that was not the one I chose. These are from breeders on kingsnake, but not the sellers with the big reputation. I was going to save a little money but now I have to take the one guy to court which is a headache and a hassle. You might save some money buying from someone you don't know, or you might get nothing at all, or you might get something else altogether than what you are expecting. You also take a bigger chance with diseases and snakes that won't eat and mites and all that other stuff too. Paying for the genetics might mean getting a healthier snake, more resistent to diseases too. Just because you are not planning on breeding doesn't mean you don't want the best, and the best have the best genetics. I won't buy from no-name sellers anymore. If I pay a little more I consider it money well spent at this point. Good luck.
