I think you've got it. I am a firm believer that since hognoses are diurnal and visually oriented predators, they benefit greatly from not only a light source, but also full spectrum lighting. This is why I disagree with using UTH exclusively for hogs. At my former job with a large collection of VA native snakes, if we had problems with feeding, the first thing we'd try to do is get the snake out of the rack and into a tank with supplemental lighting.

It's easy to assume that the snake is depressed (given the lack of activity and change in appetite), and the easiest way to test this is to move it back to its tank and see if it resumes its normal activity. I'd like to hear the results of this, please post back when you have more info.
