Thanks, thats pretty much what I was thinking.
Unfortunately glass is too heavy and more importantly fragile for my current situation, so that isn't a plausible option, I was curious as to which would be the lesser of two evils. I plan on putting at least a foot of wood below the clear portion above the soil, so hopefully that will minimize his scratching on the clear portion.
