About 2 months ago I put a new pond in my yard. I replaced a vinyl stream with a plastic preformed pond. It was to deep for my boxies so I put a false floor in with slate. Except a small cavern that I thought no boxie would go into because they would have to dive underwater and crawl into it. I was wrong. I went to clean the bottom of the pond out a few days later and removed the slate floor. To my horror there was a motionless box turtle on the floor of the pond. My heart dropped. I grabbed him out and set him on the ground. He was limp and unconcious. He then opened his eyes and gasped then dropped dead. Now I love all animals and even help drowning bugs out of my pool, but I even suprised myself when I put my lips around the turtles nose and mouth and gently blew air into his lungs. I figured I had to. It was because of my laziness that this turtle lost his life. I felt his chest expand as I blew air into his lungs but there was no sign of life.
I buried him inside the 4' fence that surrounds my enclosure.
I did not mention it to anyone but my mom and fiance'. I felt really bad and did not want to talk about it.
Last week I was out back showing my mom the flowers in my enclosure. As we walked through the yard she said "there is a turtle over here" I knew that they could not escape my enclosure. I walked over and it was the turtle that had drowned. I looked where I had buried him and it look like he dug out long ago. He was living in the fenced in area that surrounds my enclosure. He is fine and esting well. I am happy he is back.
