It allows you to screw up. Give the snake a choice. Dry cage, moist hide box, moist cage, dry hide box, whatever. Give the snake a choice, then you can't go wrong (unless the snake is mentally challenged).
Also, each snake is different, so find out for yourself. If the snake is always in the water dish, it might be telling you something (cage is too hot, mites, or you need more humidity, or there's no suitable hide better than the water dish). If your snake is always in a dry hide box, well that might tell you something to. Snakes are wonderful things when we actually watch them and study them. -----
