I like the idea of the food platter surrounded by water to fool the ants...

Here's a link to a great website about nutritional needs of box turtles: I would suggest that you read it to get an idea of how to enhance your turtles' diet. It was a great help to me when I first got started.
You should be providing them with more protein and some calcium rich greens in addition to the fruits and veggies that you're giving them now.
