Agreed. You can't throw just any earthworm into a pen and expect it to survive. If the conditions are not good for the worm's they will die.

Another possibility is that the top soil you used may have had a higher than average amount of unaged manurer in it which can BURN sensitive animals (like earthworms, amphibians, etc.) and even burn/kill plants.
