If you have had the boa for a while, you certainly have observed it long enough to know the snake's reaction when hungry. Since the reaction you incurred seems completely out of the ordinary and unlike your boa's normal feeding response, one can only guess the reaction was defensive. Whether such was induced by the introduction of the ferrets is uncertain, but certainly possible.
I know several people who maintain both reptiles and ferrets successfully, but make certain their ferrets do not have access to the same rooms as their herps are maintained. Perhaps this is something you may wish to consider..
