I usually will open the egg when I see a slit - or if 3 days pass and some are not out, I'll pip it myself, to check on the animal.
It's fairly common that babies that go back in will drown, so I just cut them open enough for some of the unnecessary fluid to leak out.
I've never cut a snake (knock on wood) yet, and I've done it a bunch of times.
