Temps of 80-85 aren't excessive for the short period of time each day that you are concerned about, and your male thayeri is a clever one. He has found his own source of AC under his water bowl, so there is in fact a cool spot for him to use during the heat of the day. As any liquid evaporates, it absorbs heat as it converts into a vapor form. This is the basic principle of refrigeration and what is happening with that water bowl is similar to what happens on the surface of your skin when your body needs to cool itself. His water bowl is being cooled by the evaporation of the water in it and he has found himself a nice cool spot under the bowl.



I wouldn’t worry about him much, it sounds like he is doing fine. If you still want to try cooling his favorite hide with a cold pack you might want to wrap it in a cloth to keep it cool a little longer and provide a safe barrier between the frozen surface and the snake.
