I follow both sports and look at it sort of as Morphs verses Locality. Morph guys are attracted to the flash and hype while the locality guys appreciate the pure beauty and natural history. I like both for different reasons. Just like ...........................
The guys that say boxing is boring don't really appreciate the skill and technique involved they just want flash. If the fighters aren't flailing away it's dull. To these guys the looping arm punch's and clumsy take downs found in the UFC represent excitement, watching two sweaty guys laying on the ground with their legs wrapped around each other. Today's hybrid UFC fighters are really jacks of all trades and masters of none. It's their short comings as much as their strengths that make them exciting. While I do find some of the fights entertaining and the guys are tough they do come off very sloppy, but this is the very aspect that most UFC fight fans enjoy. Bar fight appeal.
As far as popularity go's I can see the UFC being more popular then boxing in a general way for the same reasons P Diddy sells more records then Coltrane. The one thing I don't see yet is a true sports icon immerging from the UFC like ALI, Tyson, Sugar Ray, Roy Jones etc. Even Lennox Lewis is more of a household name world wide then anyone past or present the UFC has produced.
It's interesting that for a sport on the rise the UFC is already resorting to head lining their biggest events with bogus fiascos such as Gracie / Hughes ,Shamrock / Ortiz ,Couture / Liddell is the sport that thin that they have to relie on washed up retreads for their main events? Gracie hadn't fought in TEN YEARS and he steps in and gets a title shot are you kidding ! And Ken Shamrock wow I never thought I'd see a sadder spectacle then Tyson post Don King but Shamrock takes the cake and he's the UFC's most recognizable name. What next a Kimo / Sylvia maybe Don Fry match up ? Ernie Eison
