I just got some exciting news: I am currently overseas and received an e-mail from my son saying that one of the babies from this year's golden corn breeding is a yellowish looking one. (So maybe this gene is proven out). I just thought I would share these incredible news. I had made an attempt to breed her largest son to her earlier this year and didn't think it worked. He was a (powerfed), 26" long and only cooled for a month so he could grow as much as possible. I left him in there with her for about three weeks in the spring. When I thought I was running out of time in her breeding window, I removed him and put a large 5' WC, normal male in there with her that I found about a hundred yards of where I found her (I had just wanted some eggs out of her for insurance, at that time). THAT breeding I did witness, though it may have been very late in her breeding window!? Well, based on the e-mail that I received, maybe her son DID breed with her during those three weeks (if only once). It was kind of strange that more than half her eggs turned out to be slugs (unforunately 8 slugs and 6 good ones, I think). Last year I had 13 out of 13 good ones. Now they are hatching and my son says there is a yellowish looking baby cruising around in the container!!! This could be it - possible genetic proof? It is also possible that the WC male found in the same area as the female is related to her?
I have told him & the wife to send some pics as soon as possible. Hopefully I will have some pics in a day or two. It's hard getting a hold of my family based on my current job here, but I will keep trying. . . For those that are not familiar, or new members, here's a pic of the nearly 4 foot mother (a WC female from SE. NC. that I found in Sept. 04' on the road in a heavily wooded area near the Cape Fear river):
