I used newspaper as a substrate and they did well. They are very gentle and easy going snakes. The babies I had were picky preferring live mice and only live mice. They switched out of that in about 2 years and started taking f/t. Then they never looked back. In short they are wonderful docile snakes that are very easy to keep. You will be very happy with them.
