Substrate for Glossies

I have had mine for 4 or 5 years and have used Aspen for most of that time. I am using shredded Aspen but have used shavings as well. My curiosity with this snake is that mine eats only occasionally but appears obese. I believe this species to have a low metabolism compared to other desert species. I am curious about what others have to say on this.
