I just use about 2 layers. If you use a heat lamp or heating pad, the area right under, or above, it should be around 90 degree; this should keep the rest of tank around 80 degree. Nightime temperature can drop down to the low 70. I think in your case if you use only 2 layers of paper towel that might do the trick.
