The twins were sharing a yolk in an egg that was not even the largest of the clutch. It was sad because the larger of the twins lived for about a day after pipping, but the smaller one was under-developed and showed no signs of life at all. I didn't see any obvious defects or deformities: they both looked quite perfect, albeit small, and had pipped a little later than clutchmates, so they weren't premature in that sense. I wonder how often twins hatch successfully...it seems as though the odds would certainly be against survival of even one.
The hatchlings from the other clutch also appeared to be well formed and hadn't pipped early, so I don't know what happeened to them.
There will be more hatchlings to come, no doubt (in fact another is pipping as I write this), but it's rough when the very first ones of the season don't make it.
