Well I see no reason to not do what you are doing so I'll answer the question.

I have used a stiff putty knife before to get the piece off you are talking about. You pretty much have to just break up the plastic to get it off.

I have taken a couple aquariums apart that have gotten cracked or in some other way broken and used the glass for sliding doors like you are wanting to do and as long as the glass isnt tempered take it down and have the edges sanded and it will work great.
