I was involved with an outreach entomology club in college four years ago. We had mostly exotic insects and arachnids but also quite a few reptiles. One day I went to feed the tarantulas and black widows and found a group of people clustered around a tank with two baby corn snakes, one normal and one amel. It was the first time I'd ever heard of corns and I fell in love immediately. My roommate (who was also part of the BugZoo) wanted to get one of her own and she had no trouble talking me into joining her. We each got one for $15 from the local breeder who sold to the BugZoo, and I've had my Sam ever since.
I plan on getting a male coral snow in the next month and I want to get a female to match him in another five years or so, when I graduate from med school. I was going to wait until then to get them both but they're so gorgeous, I'm giving in on one of them early.
