if you don't get the cool mist then you have to deal with replacements wicks and filters and that stuff, so cool mist is the way to go. I got one with a humidistat too, that's great, and it has a 3 gallon capacity which works really great for me because I only have to fill it every now and then. I use Brita water in it and the maintenance is almost nothing. Mine is a Hunter "care free" Humidifier Plus. It was much cheaper on eBay than anywhere else. I had a little problem and the company replaced the whole unit without my having to ship it back to them! I loved that. They did that even though I bought it from an eBay seller too. I would recommend them to anyone, and if I need another I will buy another Hunter.
That said, I have found that no matter how humid the room is you might still have to spray snakes if you use lamps. Lamps dry the air a lot. It is a LOT easier to keep proper humidity with the humidifier though.
